Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: What is “The Free City of Lochlainn?
A: “The Free City of Lochlainn” will be a guild/city within Funcoms upcoming MMO Age of Conan.
- Q: What exactly is an MMO?
A: An MMO, or Massively Multiplayer Online Game, is a gaming universe where thousands of players can connect to a vast 3D online world. In this world they can play with and against other players on servers hosted by a game developer.
- Q: What do you mean by Free city?
A: In Lochlainn you’ll be able to get the benefits without contributing “anything” back. You can get for example open a shop, tavern etc and get the most out of your prestige class (high level crafting demands a guild) without having to stick to strict rulesets and raidschedule and play when and how much you feel like.
With that said there are a few rules:
- You have to pay a small tax to the guild for upkeep of walls, guards, towers etc.
- Quoted from rules: A "Call of Duty" issued by the City Council must be followed by every citizen matching the assigned description (e.g. a "Call to Arms" for Soldiers and Rogues must be followed by every citizen of those archetypes). Omission to a "Call of Duty" might lead to banishment from the city (and the guild)… This is for the purpose of defending the city or attacking the rival NPC city that constantly threatens Lochlainn. A “Call of Duty” will never be issued for PVP combat.
- For the full ruleset look here.
- Q: So you can force me to come defend the city?
A: Technically yes, as long as your online we expect you to come defend your city but if you are deep in the Dungeons of “unfinished” fighting a named mob called Bob the L33t we wont pull you from it. Just remember that the mobs attacking wont spare your tavern, shop or brothel just because your not there to defend it.
- Q: So you’re not really a guild are you?
A: No, in game mechanics we are a guild, but not in setup. So you wont be able to join any other guilds while you are a citizen of Lochlainn. However we also have several smaller sub-guilds within Lochlainn like mercenary companies and a Thieves guild that citizens can join if they like to add to their own gaming experience. Joining such guilds will grant you no extra benefits from Lochlainn and are purely here to enhance your gaming experience.
- Q: What about this council thing then? Looks an awful lot like leadership?
A: Well, leadership is not necessarily a bad thing you know. The council will be democratically elected with votes every few months where anyone can run for any position, with the exception of Mayor and Class-specific posts. The council will make decisions on relations to other guilds, tax rate, new buildings, defence of the town, citizenship etc. Larger decisions might be handled by guild polls.
- Q: Ok, sounds fine. How can I influence the council then?
A: Well as in most democracies you can vote for a candidate you know shares your opinions, you can talk to any of the council members as long as you can behave yourself(this appears not to apply in real life democracies), you can talk to you class representative and have him or her bring your case to the council and you can even run for office yourself!
- Q: So I can run for any position?
A: Well, like I mentioned before there are some offices that have requirements. Each class has a class representative; like every rogue can talk to the Blackguard, which is their class representative, each warrior can talk to the sellsword etc. Since Lochlainn also focuses heavily on trade and crafting the crafters also has representative called the merchant.
Every other position has a preferred prestige class but anyone can still apply. The exception is Mayor, which needs to be a lord for game mechanic reasons.
- Q: Sounds neat, I’m gonna run for chief of recycling if I join. Just a few more questions; Will Lochlainn be on a server with a specific ruleset?
A: First of all: chief of recycling is not a position in Lochlainn atm, for a list of offices click here.
For your original question: ATM we do not know if there will be servers with specific rulesets like PVP and RP servers. But as it looks now Lochlainn will be built on a Normal server. This might change tough once we get closer to release.
- Q: But I’m really into roleplaying, I sound just like the dead alewives! OR: But I’m really into PVP, I pwn n00bs as a form of therapy!
A: Well that’s the beauty of a free city. If you want to roleplay and try to sleep with the prophet of the Hand of Set we wont stop you or if you want to roam the Border Kingdoms looking for a fight with ever newbie in the MMO we wont stop you. Just remember not to drag the guild into your personal vendettas.
- Q: Sounds great, so what are the requirements to join?
A: Well this probably wont come as a surprise since the whole FAQ has told you that Lochlainn emphasise freedom, but common decency is a requirement. Just behave yourself and it should be all right. To become a citizen of Lochlainn, just check out our Forums where you can fill out an application.
- Q: Well I think I wanna join but I’m looking for a place where I can read some more info and ask a few more questions.
A: Just click here and you should find anything you need
