Story: The timeline of Age of Conan is set shortly after 'The Hour of the Dragon' so Conan is King of Aquilonia. Players obviously can not play as Conan but rather build their own character in the Hyborian world. They can chose to become an Aquilonian, Cimmerian or Stygian character. And there are 12 classes to chose from which range from Soldier classes like Guardian, Conqueror and Dark Templars over Rogue classes like Barbarian, Ranger and Assassin to Priests such as Tempest of Set, Bear Shaman or Priest of Mitra. The three Mage classes (Demonologist, Herald of Xotli and Necromancer) are reserved for the Stygian characters only.

Since Age of Conan is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO in short), the content and story is different than in the single player games described on this website. Online games live from various different quests players can solve. Some are connected with other quests while others are just the "bring me that - get reward" which are present in every MMO. But there is a so called "Destiny Quest" in Age of Conan which draws like a red thread through the entire game and through all the 80 levels a character can gain.

Toth-Amon is plotting against Aquilonia and its King - Conan. Thoth Amon is trying to revive the Grim Gray God - a deity once imprisoned by the Atlanteans. Thoth Amon seeks to release the beast and assume control of him. The deity has been imprisoned in an idol of himself. Players have the task to find four pieces of an artefact called the 'Phoenix Medallion'. Within the medallion rests a slumbering Atlantean god which is the only chance to defeat the Grim Gray God should Thoth-Amon succeed in resurrecting him. During this quest, players also get the chance to meet King Conan in his castle in Tarantia ... and will confront Toth-Amon later on.

Characters: Conan Thoth-Amon

The list of characters in Age of Conan is simply too long to be posted here. There are hundreds of characters (not controlled by players) that are living in the Hyborian world of Age of Conan. Merchants, whores, inn keepers, bandits, Vanir raiders, Ymirish, Frost Giants, all sorts of wild animal you can think of. Also in terms of lore characters, Age of Conan presents a wide choice. There is of course King Conan and Toth-Amon. But also many of Conan's old foes and friends can be found. Most of Conan's enemies are dead by the time the game's timeline and plot is set. But through the dark magic of Toth-Amon, some have been brought back to live under a terrible curse. So the players can encounter them too.

Locations:

Age of Conan is an MMO which means that thousands of players play together on a server and experience the world and adventure together (or against each other if they prefer to play 'Player versus Player' on specific servers or in specific playfields). The game therefore offers massive regions in Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia. In addition, the Barachan Isles including the pirate city of Tortage are available for adventure. Finally parts of the Border Kingdom give players a ground for PvP gameplay and guilds the option to build battlekeeps which other guilds can lay siege to. In all three major nations there are also build spots for guilds where they can build guild cities that can not be attacked by other guilds or players.

For more details and maps about the different regions check the Locations section.
